The dawn of the petroleum age in the 19th century was sparked by the need to fuel an increasingly illuminated world. Whale oil was no longer viable because of high demand paired with the overhunting and subsequent endangerment of the sperm whale. Crude, or rock oil as it was first known, was a leap of faith toward a new source of energy (literally a spectacular fusion of Spiritualism and the emergent field of petroleum geology).
