This roadway serves as the backbone of the extraction industry in the Permian Basin, the most productive oil field in the world. Inspired by Ed Ruscha, we made hundreds of photographs from the back of a pickup truck of the unrelenting scroll of mancamps, pumpjacks, and oil outfitters collectively known as the "Petroplex.” These were assembled as a 128-panel accordion fold book that extends to 58 feet in length when unfurled. Before that, they worked alongside their parents on this same land; they are the third generation to farm here. Millions of pounds of cotton are harvested in the region every year, most of which are shipped 7,000 miles away on cargo ships to China for milling and production.Each fall, my wife ritually returns to help her father harvest the cotton. Alongside her, I have been visiting, working on, and photographing this place for the entirety of my adult life. Our children too know the farm as an essential part of their lives. These migrants are among tens of millions of people who are currently displaced, seeking asylum, or stateless; add in those migrating for labor and economic opportunity, and the number increases to a quarter billion people moving around the world.One to Another activated Artpace’s Hudson Showroom and Main Space galleries in Fall 2018, turning them into spaces of listening, critical inquiry, and participation. The exhibition invited viewers to contemplate their own familial migration stories within the context of larger migration narratives. Stories gathered from around the country served as a starting point, but the exhibition also utilized forensic archives, video and sound installations, a refugee housing unit, and United Nations hearings to engender a critically conscious reading of how narratives are constructed within layered contexts of media, politics, and individual lives.
