Jason Reed is a Texas-based artist and educator. Drawing on a background in geography, his work traces the intersecting histories and ecologies of the southern Great Plains, where the desert gives way to the prairie.
In addition to his individual practice, much of his work involves collaboration through the participatory art and education project Borderland Collective, which Reed co-founded in 2007 with high school history teacher Ryan Sprott. Most recently, he started a printed matter project called Victory in the Wilderness Museum that examines the histories and dilemmas of the American West.
In 2025, he published Boom and Dust with artist Barry Stone, in 2023 co-edited Otherwise, It Would Be Just Another River with Molly Sherman, and in 2022 published Field Work. His books have been collected by such libraries as NYU, the Amon Carter Museum, Princeton, Yale Rare Books Library, the Hirsch Library at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, Canadian Centre for Architecture, Royal Danish Library, and Deutsche Nationalbibliothek Frankfurt.
He has created gallery and public space exhibitions at venues such as Artpace in San Antonio, Krannert Museum at the University of Illinois, storefront windows in Miles, Texas, the Blackwell School in Marfa, Texas, Galerie Reinthaler in Vienna, Austria, The Washington State History Museum, La Asamblea Legislativa in Mexico City, and the Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas at Austin.
Reed is a Professor of Photography at Texas State University and holds a BA in Geography from the University of Texas and an MFA in Photography from Illinois State University.
