Angle of Repose (Ongoing)
In the remote and quiet southwest corner of Texas, the Chisos Mountains lift out of the Chiuahuan Desert, a transitional ecology where an arid basin meets a woodland range. This sky island, as it is known, is harsh, rugged, and fragile. In the last couple of decades, the range has seen extensive tree loss from years of excessive drought caused by human-induced climate change.
I have been visiting the Chisos since I was a kid and spent many days as a teenager sitting quietly with friends, contemplating the world. The immediacy of the geology and the spareness of the landscape makes it a meditative, almost mystical landscape for me, as it has been for many people who have lived within and traveled through the mountains from time immemorial.

An angle of repose is the steepest angle possible before something begins to slide - a geological term referring often to rocks and granular material on mountain slopes. This work is about the literal slopes of the Chisos range and the precarious balance of an ancient form that is at once stable and reactive. Yet, this work is also a reflection on the precariousness of our times, and how the angle seems to be getting steeper - socially, politically, and ecologically.
