Angle of Repose (Ongoing)

An angle of repose is the steepest angle possible before something begins to slide - a geological term referring often to rocks and granular material on mountain slopes.

In the remote and quiet southwest corner of Texas, the Chisos Mountains lift out of the Chiuahuan Desert, a transitional ecology where a woodland range intersects an arid basin. This ‘sky island’ as it is known, is harsh, rugged, and fragile. Oaks, junipers, and Pinyon Pines live in proximity to ocotillo, yucca, and prickly pear. In the last couple of decades, the range has seen extensive tree loss from years of excessive drought caused by human-induced climate change. This work is about the slopes of the Chisos range and the precarious balance of an ancient form that is at once stable and reactive -  an appropriate analog for the precariousness of our times, and how the angle seems to be getting steeper - socially, politically, and ecologically.
